🐢The southern region of Thailand can be divided into two climatically distinct areas: the southeast, facing the Gulf of Thailand, and the southwest, facing the Andaman Sea. Each area experiences a different monsoon throughout the year, providing visitors with excellent weather conditions regardless of the time of year.
Southern Thailand is home to many islands, with Phuket, Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan, Ko Phi Phi, and Ko Tao being the most well-known. Recently, Ko Lipe and Ko Lanta have also become popular destinations. However, there are dozens of lesser-known islands that offer unique and rewarding experiences. It’s essential to conduct some research when selecting an island or two to visit.
Phuket is Thailand’s largest and most visited island, with over a third of all tourists to Thailand visiting at least once during their trips. In the aftermath of the 2004 Asian Tsunami, parts of the island suffered significant damage, but now the most popular beach areas are fully restored, and the crowds have returned.
Budget travelers often avoid Phuket because of its high prices and touristy nature, choosing instead to visit backpacker-friendly islands along the western coasts of Ranong, Phang Nga, Krabi, Trang, and Satun provinces. However, don’t overlook the mainland in your quest for tropical beach paradises. Krabi province’s coastline, including the Ao Nang and Railay areas, boasts some of the most breathtaking scenery in Thailand. The area’s stunning beaches and towering karsts make it a popular rock-climbing destination.
Heading north from Phuket along the west coast, you’ll come across Khao Lak, which was almost entirely destroyed by the tsunami but has since been rebuilt and regained its popularity among tourists. Further north, you can explore Khao Sok National Park and hike through ancient rainforests.
If the season is unsuitable for visiting the west coast, visitors tend to spend their time lounging on the hammocks of the east coast islands, including Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan, and Ko Tao. These islands are well-developed and are connected via regular ferry services to each other and the mainland. Ko Samui, the largest of these islands, has an international airport, numerous shopping centers, hundreds of resorts, and three international hospitals. Both Ko Pha Ngan, famous for its Full Moon Parties, and Ko Tao, renowned for its diving, attract many visitors.
